At our MVCAN Fall Kick-Off Meeting, we will hear from one of our favorite members of Congress, Josh Harder, from CD-10 (Modesto).

Team MVCAN, DEMOCRACY ACTION MARIN and many other local groups worked hard the entire year in 2018 to help flip this district and elect this impressive young U.S. Representative, turning out >200 volunteers to call and canvass for Josh Harder. He’ll fill us in on his first year in Congress, the legislation he’s introduced and helped pass, as well as news from his district on how we can help defend his seat in 2020.

Also, on our Sunday agenda, our inspiring electoral lead and strategist Susan Bolle will give an overview of the timeline and strategy for upcoming election activities. Please join us to hear about the exciting opportunities for progressive action in the coming campaign season!

PLUS: SPECIAL RAPID RESPONSE TRAINING - Sun. Oct. 6

Our Immigration/Civil Rights team is sponsoring a special Marin Rapid Response Network Training. This training prepares volunteers to become “Legal Observers” to help monitor ICE activity. When ICE activity is reported, trained Legal Observers are deployed to a specific area within Marin County to "document" the situation. You do not need to have a legal background or be bilingual to be a Legal Observer.

Marin Rapid Response needs more volunteers in Southern Marin to be observers on an on-call basis for encounters that ICE and other law enforcement agencies have with residents. You can be trained in just 2 short hours and be ready to assist our community members.

People in 150 countries are organising for the global climate strikes September 20 - 27. Some will spend the day in protest against new pipelines and mines, or the banks that fund them; some will highlight the oil companies fueling this crisis and the politicians that enable them. Others will spend the day in action raising awareness in their communities and pushing for solutions to the climate crisis that have justice and equity at their heart.

All Community members are welcome to join in and support Seniors for Peace and students from Tam High School, who have been invited to join in with the seniors after school lets out. There will also be singing from 4 - 5pm.

TRAVEL TO ARIZONA TO CANVASS - Oct 19-27: PLAN NOW

Join with fellow MVCAN members at the Arizona Democratic Party Headquarters in Phoenix on Saturday Oct. 19 (time TBD) to canvass door-to-door and register voters. Training will be provided.

You are welcome to come for the weekend or stay the week. The AZ weather is milder in Oct. with daytime temperatures in the 70's/80’s.

We’ll be joining up with one of our partner groups from the East Bay, Commit To Flip Blue. This will be the first of many trips to AZ leading up to November 2020!

AZ is our closest flippable neighbor: changing demographics are shifting it away from its traditional status as a Republican stronghold and Trump’s favorability ratings are sinking lower and lower. Our impressive AZ Democratic Senatorial candidate, Captain Mark Kelly, is an astronaut, veteran and the husband of former Representative Gabby Giffords.

Last November, we helped win the first Democratic Senate seat in AZ in 30 years for Kyrsten Sinema. Senator Sinema’s 2018 opponent, Martha McSally, was appointed by the governor to fill McCain’s Senate seat, but she is closely aligned with Trump and is now tied with Mark Kelly in the polls.

WRITE POSTCARDS FROM HOME TO STOP VOTER SUPPRESSION

Our ongoing MVCAN postcarding efforts (along with participation at the national level through Reclaim Our Vote) have been very effective at boosting voter registration rates. Apparently, the counties where we wrote postcards are seeing a much higher rate of voter registration than other counties.

We are continuing to target Virginia, which is having state elections this November. We have finished Caroline County and are switching to Henrico County.

Also, please consider donating to help Reclaim Our Vote, which is a nonpartisan voter registration and get-out-the-vote campaign. This campaign, which supplies the names, addresses and scripts for the disenfranchised voters, reaches out mainly to voters of color on Unregistered and Inactive lists in key voter-suppression states.

The Sausalito phone bank has had 25-30 phone/text bankers every Saturday, June through August. This is a great sign -- this level of participation in the middle of the summer, more than a year away from the 2020 election. Our partnership with Sister District Marin continues as we call voters in Virginia. The entire VA House & Senate are up for election November 5, 2019 -- and we have the opportunity to take the majority and gain a powerful trifecta (both state houses + governor) to ensure we get fair redistricting in 2021, protect a woman’s right to choose and enact sweeping gun safety legislation already proposed by VA Governor Northam.

We’re also laying the groundwork for the big election coming up in 420 days, reaching out to voters in Arizona and other Super States to make sure we turn out every voter to take back our country Nov. 3, 2020.

Please bring your charged cell phone AND a laptop, iPad or tablet along with your earbuds with a mic. And don’t forget your water bottle.

Come and learn about civic engagement and voter registration for our incarcerated community

Speakers will include Lynda Roberts, Registrar of Voters, Marin County Elections Department, Mindy Romero from the Center for Civic Engagement, and the Marin County Jail Reentry Team.

Also, hear a success story from Brendon Woods, Alameda County Public Defender.

There will be a discussion of the next steps for our community and what you can do to be part of the process.

MVCAN MADE A HUGE CONTRIBUTION TO THE NORTH CAROLINA CD-9 SPECIAL ELECTION EFFORT

Kudos to all our electoral leads and scores of volunteers who made 1000’s of calls, texts and sent nearly 500 postcards for the special election effort in North Carolina.

As you know, on Sept 10, Dan McCready (D) lost a very close election to Dan Bishop (R). Although we did not have an outright win, the extreme tightness of the vote is very significant.

David Wasserman, a US House election expert, commented on Tuesday night right after the election was called,. “To be clear, a ~2% Bishop (R) victory in #NC09, a district that voted for Trump by 12%, is still bad news for the House GOP overall. It won't do anything to convince House Rs undecided about seeking reelection in 2020 that they're in position to win back the majority.”

Let’s continue to contest every race!

MVCAN REPRESENTED AT IOWA CONFERENCE FOR GRASSROOTS LEADERS

Renee Linde, an MVCAN member of the Airlift Leadership Team, traveled to Iowa in August to attend the first National Network Assembly, a conference dedicated to young leaders of grassroots organizations from across the country.

Over four days Renee listened to inspiring keynote speakers, such as Heather Booth, a life-long community organizer and activist. In addition, Renee participated in an array of round tables and workshops focused on grassroots collaboration, organizational development, and free technology tools that are key to smart organizing.

Inspiringly, over 18 leaders in the Sunrise Movement were in attendance, creating a conference within a conference, demonstrating that there is a vibrant, brilliant group of young people working to move this country forward to combat climate change. Renee, like other MVCAN leaders attending conferences and trainings, will be bringing back valuable organizing skills to apply to our local group.
