LET'S CHILL OUT BEFORE WE TURN UP THE ACTIVIST HEAT

Come celebrate the success of past, current, and future actions in MVCAN!

Please join us and bring your friends who would like to plug into MVCAN. We’ve had a great time schmoozing and dancing the past two years with friends new and old! Our fabulous activist partners from around Marin are also welcome.
MVCAN 3rd Annual Picnic and Celebration

Sunday, July 21, 4 - 7pm

Tamalpais Valley Community Center, 203 Marin Ave (New Location)

Bring your favorite salad, hors d’oeuvre, desserts, or drinks. MVCAN will supply Grilly’s catering for main dishes, meat and veggie.

Please RSVP to Carol Korenbrot at carol.korenbrot@gmail.com and tell us who you are and what you’d like to bring.

With our MVCAN Eco-Warrior team leading the way, we have decided that since climate change is a major MVCAN issue, we should all walk the walk, as well as talk the talk. Let’s pitch in to bring our own plates, cups, cutlery and napkins to the party and also avoid plastic or any material that doesn't biodegrade. We also strongly suggest attendees arrive by carpool, bus or bike. Thank you all so much - on behalf of our planet!

See you there!

LIGHTS FOR LIBERTY: A VIGIL TO END HUMAN DETENTION CAMPS - Friday, July 12

On Friday July 12th, 2019, vigils to end human detention camps under the auspices of Lights for Liberty will bring thousands of Americans to protest at detention camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees.

Key events are planned in El Paso, Texas, where migrants are being housed in outdoor conditions under a bridge with no running water for months at a time; Homestead, FL, at a migrant child detention facility that has caused mass abuse and neglect; in San Diego, near the point of entry site from Tijuana, and similar sites.

MVCAN is proud to co-host our local Marin vigil to support these crucially important protests around the country:

LIGHTS FOR LIBERTY; A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps
Friday, July 12, 7:00 - 9:00 pm
Novato City Hall, 901 Sherman Ave, Novato

The event will culminate in a candlelight vigil at 9 pm

For more info on the Lights For Liberty organization, see Here.

PHONE BANK IN SAUSALITO - Sat. July 13, 2pm - 4pm

Artwork by Susan Stanger.

Vote Them Out!

We know we must take back our country to stop the continuous destruction of our democracy and our cherished values. We have work to do - it won’t be easy. We must vote them out. Every one of them. Every day and every election counts.

In addition to working towards the general election in 2020, we have important state level elections in November 2019.

Come join our phone bank, co-hosted with Sister District Marin:

Phone Bank

Sat. July 13, 2 - 4 pm

80 Liberty Ship Way, Suite 20

Sausalito

To register for July 13 and get details, sign up Here.

We will be calling voters in Virginia. This November, the entire VA House and Senate are up for election, and we have the opportunity to take the majority. Not only would Dems gain a trifecta in VA (Governor, plus House and Senate control), but we could finally pass the Equal Rights Amendment; Virginia is poised to become the 38th and final state needed to ratify the ERA!

Please bring your charged cell phone AND a laptop, iPad or table along with your earbuds with a mic.

4

PLASTIC-FREE JULY ACTION FROM ECO TEAM

The MVCAN Eco-team is suggesting that July is the month we all try to kick the plastic habit!

Here are two separate July activities to help you start a new plastic-free lifestyle:

July 1 - July 31: Join the Plastic Free EcoChallenge: a month-long effort to shift us away from our single-use plastic dependency.

To participate, go to Plastic Free EcoChallenge.

Just select the actions you'd like to commit to, and invite everyone you know who's ready to get on this bandwagon.

ALSO, check out a similar site, Plastic Free July, which challenges people around the world to refuse single-use plastics. To participate, take the challenge Here.

Last year more than 120 million people participated from across 177 countries, and the challenge prevented 490 million kg of plastic waste from entering the waste stream!

MVCAN: WHERE WE’VE BEEN AND WHAT WE DID

BIG TURNOUT FOR MARIN TRUTH FORUM - July 9

On July 9 in an open Board of Supervisors meeting, more than 100 pro-immigration rights activists gathered for the Marin County sheriff’s mid-year presentation on the status of Marin law enforcement interactions with ICE.

More than 25 impacted individuals gave testimony critical of ICE and Sheriff Doyle. Many asked for a complete exclusion of ICE from Marin. Speakers included many children who pleaded movingly on behalf of their families and communities. MVCAN was well represented and Essie Blau spoke compellingly about the issues.

The impact of Marin immigrants rights activism over the past two years has resulted in a marked reduction in the percentage of detained undocumented immigrants that were ultimately arrested by ICE from 44% in 2018 down to 18% in 2019 (to date)! Still, there is much more monitoring and additional improvements to be made.

Thank you to the MVCAN Immigration/Civil Rights team for supporting the Truth Forum!

ACTIVISTS BIG HIT AT FOURTH OF JULY PARADE

For the third year running MVCANers and other activists marched with Congressman Jared Huffman along the Corte Madera parade route. We were received with enthusiasm and many “thank yous” from the crowds. We also passed out plenty of MVCAN flyers to well-wishers.
